The MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) on Microsoft Windows 2000 certification is a mid-level certification aimed at the IT professionals who analyze the business requirements, design and implement network infrastructures for business solutions based on the Microsoft Windows 2000 platform and Microsoft Windows Server System. The MCSE on Microsoft Windows 2000 is an updated version of the MCSE on Microsoft Windows NT MCSE and appeared in April 2000 when Microsoft began to release exams based on the Windows 2000 product family.
This certification does not retire but newer versions of it are released every few years as Microsoft replaces their core server technologies. There are no specific prerequisites for taking a MCSE exam, although Microsoft does state that the MCSE is aimed at candidates who have at least one year of experience in implementing and administering a network operating system and a client operating system, and designing a network infrastructure. When a candidate passes his or her first qualifying exam for the MCSE program, they achieve a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) status.
Job roles of those pursuing this certification typically include: systems engineers, technical support engineers, systems analysts, network analysts, and technical consultants.
To achieve the MCSE, a candidate must pass a total of seven exams, which consists of four core exams (70-215, 70-216, 70-217 and either 70-210 or 70-270), one design exam (from 70-219, 70-220, 70-221, 70-226, 70-297 and 70-298) and two elective exams. CompTIA's Security+ may count towards one elective.
The MCSE on Microsoft Windows 2000 has two specialization tracks: the MCSE: Security and the MCSE: Messaging. To achieve MCSE: Security you must take and pass the 70-220 exam as your design exam and 70-214 and 70-227 or CompTIA's Security+ as your two electives. To achieve MCSE: Messaging you must take and pass either 70-224 and 70-225 or 70-284 and 70-285 as your two electives.
