The MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 certification is aimed at IT professionals who analyze the business requirements, design and implement network infrastructures for business solutions based on the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 platform and Server System. The MCSE on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 does not replace the MCSE on Microsoft Windows 2000. It is an updated version of the MCSE on Microsoft Windows 2000 and exists along side the MCSE on Microsoft Windows 2000 and the earlier MCSE on Microsoft Windows NT. The MCSE on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 started in August 2003 when Microsoft began to release exams based on the Windows Server 2003 product family.
This certification does not retire but newer versions of it are released every few years as Microsoft replaces their core server technologies. There are no specific prerequisites for taking an MCSE exam, although Microsoft does state that the MCSE is aimed at candidates who have at least one year of experience in implementing and administering a network operating system and a client operating system, and designing a network infrastructure. When a candidate passes his or her first qualifying exam for the MCSE program, they achieve a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) status.
Job roles of those pursuing this certification typically include: systems engineers, technical support engineers, systems analysts, network analysts, and technical consultants.
To achieve the MCSE, a candidate must pass a total of seven exams, which consists of four core networking system exams (70-290, 70-291, 70-293 and 70-294), one core client operating system exam (either 70-210 or 70-270), one design exam (either 70-297 or 70-298) and one elective exam. CompTIA's Security+ and Unisys' UN0-101 may count towards the elective exam.
An MCSE on Microsoft Windows 2000 can upgrade his or her MCSE to Windows Server 2003 by passing the 70-292 and 70-296 exams.
The MCSE on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 has two specialization tracks: the MCSE: Security and the MCSE: Messaging. To achieve MCSE: Security you must take and pass the 70-298 exam as your design exam and 70-299 as your elective. In addition you must also pass either 70-227 or CompTIA's Security+. To achieve MCSE: Messaging you must take and pass 70-284 as your elective, as well as 70-285.
