The MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) on Microsoft Windows 2000 certification is an entry-level certification aimed at IT professionals who implement, manage, and troubleshoots network systems based on the Microsoft Windows 2000 platform and Microsoft Windows Server System. The MCSA on Microsoft Windows 2000 started in January 2002 when Microsoft released the 70-218 exam.
This certification does not retire but newer versions of it are released every few years as Microsoft replaces their core server technologies. There are no specific prerequisites for taking an MCSA exam, although Microsoft does state that the MCSA is aimed at candidates who have at least six months experience in implementing and administering a network operating system and a client operating system, and designing a network infrastructure. When a candidate passes his or her first qualifying exam for the MCSA program, they achieve a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) status.
Job roles of those pursuing this certification typically include: systems administrators, network administrators, information systems administrators, network operations analysts, network technicians, and technical support specialists.
To achieve the MCSA, a candidate must pass a total of four exams, which consists of three core exams (70-215, 70-218 and either 70-210 or 70-270), and one elective exam. CompTIA's Security+ may count towards the elective. In addition, CompTIA's A+ and Server+ may count towards the elective, or CompTIA's A+ and Network+.
The MCSA on Microsoft Windows 2000 has two specialization tracks: the MCSA: Security and the MCSA: Messaging. For MCSA: Security you must take and pass the 70-214 as your elective as well as 70-227 or CompTIA's Security+. For MCSA: Messaging you must take and pass either 70-224 or 70-284 as your elective.
