The CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional) certification is a mid-level certification aimed at IT professionals who design, implement and maintain routed and switched corporate network infrastructures that include LAN, WAN, and dial access technologies. The current version of the CCNP was introduced in 2003.
This certification expires after three years at which point the CCNP candidate must either pass the CCNP composite exam (642-891), or pass the BSCI (642-801) BCMSN and (642-811) exams. Alternatively, a CCNP candidate can pass an exam at the CCIE level. Once the CCNP has been recertified, the CCNA certification is also recertified automatically. A valid CCNA is a prerequisite for taking a CCNP exam.

To achieve the CCNP, a candidate can either take three exams or four exams. For the three exam option, the candidate must pass the 642-891 composite exam, the 642-821 BCRAN exam and the 642-831 CIT exam. For the for exam option, the candidate must pass the 642-801 BSCI exam, the 642-811 CMSN exam, the 642-821 BCRAN exam and the 642-831 CIT exam.
