The ISC CISSP certification is an advanced-level, vendor-neutral certification aimed at IT professionals who design, implement and maintain information security policies, standards, and procedures for corporate networks.
This certification may retire after three years unless the CISSP certified professional earns 120 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits within that 3-year period. CPE credits can be achieved by attending CISSP educational courses or seminars, attending security conferences, attending vendor presentations, completing university/college courses, providing security training, publishing security articles or books, serving on industry boards, self-study, and performing volunteer work, including serving on ISC volunteer committees. Alternatively, the certified professional may retake and pass the CISSP exam. In addition, the certified professional must pay an annual maintenance fee.
The prerequisites for taking a CISSP exam is at least 4 years' experience or a college degree with 3 years' experience as a practicing security professional. Candidates without the required experience can become an ISC Associate for CISSP (Associate of ISC). Successful candidates who become Associate for CISSP then have 5 years in which to acquire the required experience.
