The MCSD (Microsoft Certified Solution Developer) for Microsoft .Net certification is a high-level certification aimed at IT professionals who analyze, design and maintain enterprise solutions with Microsoft development tools, technologies, and platforms. The MCSD for Microsoft .Net is an updated version of the earlier MCSD and exists along side it, although the exams for the earlier MCSD are no longer available. The MCSD for Microsoft .Net started in July 2002 when Microsoft began to release exams based on the Microsoft Visual Studio .Net product.
This certification does not retire but newer versions of it may be released as Microsoft replaces their core business development technologies and platforms. The MCSD for Microsoft .Net will still be recognized when newer versions of it appear, and will exist along side the newer MCPD. There are no specific prerequisites for taking an MCSD exam, although Microsoft does state that the MCSD is aimed at candidates who have at least two years experience in analyzing business and technical requirements, and defining solution architectures with Microsoft development tools, technologies, and platforms. When a candidate passes his or her first qualifying exam for the MCSD program, they achieve a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) status.
Job roles of those pursuing this certification typically include: software engineers, software development engineers, software architects, and consultants.
To achieve the MCSD, a candidate must pass a total of five exams, which consists of one core Web Application Development exam in either Visual Basic .Net (70-305) or Visual C# .Net (70-315), one Windows Application Development exam in either Visual Basic .Net (70-306) or Visual C# .Net (70-316), one XML Web Services and Server Components Development exam (either 70-310 for Visual Basic .Net or 70-320 for Visual C# .Net), one core Solution Architecture exam (70-300) and one elective exam (from 70-299, 70-230, 70-234, 70-301, 70-330, and 70-340).
