The MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 certification is an entry-level certification aimed at IT professionals who implement, manage, and troubleshoots network systems based on the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 platform and Server System. The Windows 2003 MCSA started in August 2003 when Microsoft began to release exams based on the Windows Server 2003 product family.
This certification does not retire but newer versions of it are released every few years as Microsoft replaces their core server technologies. There are no specific prerequisites for taking an MCSA exam, although Microsoft does state that the MCSA is aimed at candidates who have at least six months experience in implementing and administering a network operating system and a client operating system, and designing a network infrastructure. When a candidate passes his or her first qualifying exam for the MCSA program, they achieve a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) status.
Job roles of those pursuing this certification typically include: systems administrators, network administrators, information systems administrators, network operations analysts, network technicians, and technical support specialists.
To achieve the MCSA, a candidate must pass a total of four exams, which consists of three core exams (70-290, 70-291 and either 70-210 or 70-270), and one elective exam. CompTIA's Security+ may count towards the elective. In addition, CompTIA's A+ and Server+ may count towards the elective, or CompTIA's A+ and Network+.
An MCSA on Microsoft Windows 2000 can upgrade his or her MCSA to Windows Server 2003 by passing the 70-292 upgrade exam.
The MCSA on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 has two specialization tracks: the MCSA: Security and the MCSA: Messaging. For MCSA:Security you must take and pass the 70-299 as your elective as well as 70-227 or CompTIA’s Security+. For MCSA:Messaging you must take and pass 70-284 as your elective.
